16 May Achieve QTS via the Assessment Only Route – With Support from Moore Teachers
Are you an experienced teacher without QTS? Whether you’re working in Hertfordshire, West Essex, or nearby, the Assessment Only (AO) route to Qualified Teacher Status could be your fastest route to formal recognition. And with the support of Moore Teachers, the primary education specialists and one of HFL Education’s selected agencies, finding the right local school to support your QTS journey has never been easier.
Why Having QTS Matters – Now More Than Ever
Even if you’re currently working in an academy or free school, which technically aren’t required to hire QTS-qualified teachers, Qualified Teacher Status is becoming increasingly essential for long-term career progression in education.
Here’s why achieving QTS is more important than ever:
✅ Rising Standards Across All School Types
Though academies can employ unqualified teachers, most now prefer or require QTS. Trusts are moving toward consistent teaching standards and often prioritise QTS holders for permanent and leadership roles.
✅ Policy Shifts and Future Requirements
There is growing pressure from educational unions and regulatory bodies to standardise qualifications across all schools. The government has indicated ongoing discussions about tightening entry routes into teaching — making it likely that QTS will become a more formal requirement in the future, even in academies.
✅ Career Progression and Pay Scales
Teachers with QTS have access to the main pay scale, Upper Pay Range, and leadership roles in maintained schools and most academy trusts. Without QTS, you could be stuck on unqualified pay rates and excluded from key progression pathways.
✅ Job Security and Portability
With QTS, you can apply for positions across all sectors — including LA schools, MATs, and even abroad in British international schools. It protects your employability regardless of changes in school governance or policy.
✅ Recognition of Professionalism
QTS is a professional benchmark. It signals to employers, parents, and Ofsted that you meet the national standards for effective teaching. It also boosts your confidence, credibility, and career confidence.
What Is the Assessment Only Route to QTS?
The Assessment Only (AO) route allows you to achieve QTS without additional training, by demonstrating that you already meet the Teachers’ Standards. This flexible route is ideal for:
- Overseas-trained teachers working in the UK
- Unqualified teachers with classroom teaching experience in state or independent schools
- Teaching assistants who have progressed into unqualified teaching roles
It’s a short-term assessment process, not a training programme, and usually lasts no more than 12 weeks.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the AO route, you must:
- Hold a UK degree or equivalent
- Have GCSEs in English and Maths (plus Science if teaching primary)
- Show at least two years’ classroom experience across two key stages or settings
- Be teaching in a school that will support your assessment
- Hold a current enhanced DBS and meet fitness to teach standards
How the AO Route Works
- Self-Evaluation Against the Teachers’ Standards
Review your current practice to ensure you meet all eight Teachers’ Standards – from planning lessons to demonstrating professional conduct. - Find a School Willing to Support You
You’ll need a host school for the assessment period. This is where Moore Teachers can help – more on that below. - Choose an Approved AO Provider
